I appreciate Ryan being open and honest in this vlog. This was very inspirational to me as well as to many other people who are not currently there at Gallaudet.
Thank you...and be strong. Millions of deaf kids from future generations will someday thank you for your strength.
very well done, yet you did not explain (I didnt need the explanation) why Jane would not be appropriate in such language that maybe she can understand why she does not qualify. But, again being an Ice Queen, perhaps nothing will penetrate.
Although I am not an alumus of Gallaudet University, I was MSSD student for 4 years and no doubt that the role model from Gallaudet itself have left me a positive lifetime impact, of which I have never forgotten.
Currently I am trying to digest all the informations from this website, the FSSA. I do have an idea, the rare gem talent I have, can be given to show support for FSSA.For now at this moment, it will need to wait just a little bit.
At the meantime... will it become another Kent State? God forbid it! Ironically, the thought I had this time after viewing the guard assaulting students earlier today in the morning, its scared the daylight of me. No, I didn't think at that time, " another Kent State" but my my thought did follow down the similiar road. I did see assault took place with students slamming against the wall. This officer should not have done that but from his perspective, I can see why. No excuse but I think I can see what may have led to this incident.
While I want just a little time to sort out my thought concerning the unethical manner the Gallaudet adminstration have displayed, I do want to point out about the safety issue.
I am currently majoring in Criminal Justice at Minneapolis Community College and based on my experience with police departments in past decade. One thing is clear...clear understanding about law enforcment agencies must be made publicy. I dearly wish I could fly down and give a simple workshop in how to work with officers but obviously, I cannot because of my budget. The point is:
Please realize, all officers are constantly scanning their envoirment for their safety and anytime any person comes close, they do feel threatened. Silly as it may seem, it is a realistic perspective because nearly 200 officers died in the line of duty every years. The number may seem small, but when you think about 200 deaf people " died" just because they are deaf, then you rightly so would become concern. In police culture, it is only natural for officers to feel the loss likewise and fear for their life. Therefore, I am asking students to back away and give officers the room to walk around. If an officer approach and you are having a rally, give this officer a room to walk. Or other option is to show your hands, palm facing and keep it out of your pocket so officers will know that you do not have any weapon you. Then you can either stand still and do not move. Or better yet, sit on the ground with your hands on your thighs, It would be harder for officers to move you if you sit.
Do not touch officers from behind. Anytime when the situation become tense, they may react in quick, reflex reaction when touched from behind. If you must reach, either use your voice or go around to the front of officer with your hands up , palm facing.
Do not become overly animated. Keep yourself in control. Because officers are trained to believe when a person become animated, the story may not be completely true. Keep your voice calm and keep your signing within the area of your body.
Do ask officer of how may you assist for their safety.
Should a student be arrested for any reason, even disorderly conduct, do not become excite because that will add tense to already an alarming situation. Do not resist. If they decided to handcuff you, it may not always mean you are arrest. It could be either you are temportarily detained for their safety. Ask officer if you are being arrest, and based on what ground. But do not talk any further after you have been informed that you are being arrested for what so ever reason there is. Then go quietly. DO NOT SAY ANOTHER WORD UNTIL YOU HAVE CONTACT YOUR ATTORNEY AFTER YOU HAVE BEEN INFORM WITH MIRANDA RIGHT AND EVEN BEFORE THAT.
If you see someone being arrest, even unfairly, do not interfer officer's process of arresting. Because this can be consider as an interfering them from doing their job and even threatened their safety. Stand back, gently inform officer/ officers why you think he or she should not be arrest in a gentle and calm manner. If they ask you to back off, obey them.As much as you disagree, you would not want to get arrest yourself for blocking thier process.
Because of department policy, they MUST BE CUFFED FROM BEHIND. I do realize that this may take away your ablitiy to speak in ASL, but restrain yourself and realize that you do have the right to get an interpreter once you get to the police station. NO BUT WHAT AND IF. Cuffed behind your back and that is it. I cannot explain exactly why does this have to be a policy but believe me, I have heard far too many stories of how officers getting kill because they wanted to be nice to people being cuffed, Including one officer I came to know personally, who have worked so many hours, helping deaf community to understand about police and she herself got killed in the line of duty some years ago. Only because this woman who shot her to death is just " an old lady". So respect their conern for safety.
Once I put my head together and see what I can do to help you make your voice heard, please.. do officers a favor and do me a favor as well, follow these instruction then you will NOT GOING TO HAVE ANOTHER KENT STATE. This DOES NOT have to happen.

I understand that students feel things must be done now not later. I wish I could be there to help out. I can see that our protest as no easy task. We cannot compare the DPN with this protest. The issues are very different. I expect students to react slowly and keep anger under control.
Hey, Why not give flowers or something to the security, media, BOT and all of those visitors who come on campus. I tihnk such token is gentle. It will represent student's request for an open and peaceful dialouge with the BOT. (How about something with the ILY hand shape, a perfect item for this crisis)
Why not ask Deaf supporters to wear something now? Say that it be something bright yellow and blue. Ah! a ribbion (buff and blue) tied onto themselves. It'd appear unusual attatchment and people will ask about the ribbion. This will give us a chance to talk to those who ask.
Just keep on talking until we succeed. Maybe the homecoming can be our celebration. That would be very nice.

Campus officers
Well said and thank you for your concerns. Your vital message should be helpful toward the students.
