well...

whaddia say we give them a chance...seesee what happens, and if they fail to meet our expectations, perhaps we can petition them out, or find another way.

I still don't understand the motive behind the Gallaudet Adm hiring them to come back, other than their tenure (do kk and ikj have one?) Could it be because we're desperate for teachers? The people we should be attacking are the people who hired them, to find out why they've done this, and so quickly after the protest while we're still trying to heal.

I'm against this just as much as the next person, but I sincerely hope the students keep in-check with the law and MSCHE standards. Ryan, I know you said that a protest is out of the question, we have our share of ignorant students who don't give a flying frick about what happens to Gallaudet (may I take the moment to point out the student(s) who has/have been calling in the bomb threats.)

We have a lot of issues we still have to deal with, and the best way we can overcome what we're being faced with is by doing it as a unified university, and keeping the best interest of Gallaudet in mind (which means preventing it from closing!!)

Healing

Many of us on campus have seen no signs of healing in more than a year. The divisions caused by the protestors have now become hardened due to lack of healing work with the community.

We are worried about Fernandes, Jordan and Kimmel's return. The impact on the campus could be toxic. They will spark strong feelings among their supporters who have been left marginalized and powerless. At the same time, they will generate feelings of protest in those who don't support them and who have been allowed to control the university.

We fear that Fernandes, Jordan and Kimmel have the courage of their convictions. They believe in what they are saying and doing and they will continue regardless of what people around them do or say. If Gallaudet was healed and a true university, this wouldn't be a problem. But it remains in a volatile state and we think their return could spark some kind of upheaval.

As for why they would return, they believe in their work. And they have earned tenure and so have a right to return and do their work. I hope they are allowed to do it and that they are not seen as threats -- but a lot of us are worried.

Perspective folks!

A top MSCHE official said off the record that Jordan was noted for supplying unsubstantiated anecdotes rather than hard data to MSCHE. Reading between the lines, if (Jordan and) Fernandes were still in charge, we would've lost our accreditation rather than simply being on probation (although still accredited). Their departure gives us the chance to clean their mess.

As for the PART report, the original rating was the correct one. Confidential high-level sources confirm that Jordan had his friends in Congress twist a few arms at the dept of education and OMB to get the rating changed. He and Patti Kunkle spent hours figuring out how to spin the original rating to the community.

Now we scarcely have any congressional friends left, MSCHE is on our case, and OMB is an 8000 pound gorilla after our ass.

In the end, the leadership of Jordan and Fernandes was all about illusion rather than substance.

Both the accreditation mess and PART rating are Jordan's and Fernandes's ultimate legacy. Their and their stoolpigeon Karen Kimmel's return is their prerogative, but it tells you all you need to know about them. You don't defecate where you eat!

The True Facts about MSCHE and PART

Are you writing with a deep sense of irony or are you serious? Your message is so flawed I don't know how to read it. A few facts may help set the record straight:

1. In 2001, under Jordan and Fernandes, Gallaudet went through a comprehensive accreditation review conducted by MSCHE. After more than a year of self-study, a team of experts came to campus for several days. Gallaudet's accreditation was reaffirmed in the strongest possible terms. There were recommendations (which are really like requirements) made but no warnings. In fact, Gallaudet's mission was singled out for strong praise. This is in writing, black and white, if you ask for it, I think you can get a copy.

2. A great deal of hard work was ongoing related to the recommendations. In 2006, Gallaudet submitted a Periodic Review Report which is required halfway into the 10 year accreditation cycle. Again, Gallaudet received a response from MSCHE expressing strong support. In fact, the selection of Fernandes as president was mentioned as a cause for celebration by the MSCHE evaluators. In addition, the strategic planning work, the University Budget Committee process, and work on diversity and inclusion were singled out for the highest praise.

There were ongoing issues discussed but no warnings of any kind. Reaffirmation of accreditation, which can never be taken for granted, was probable based on the response from MSCHE. I know that the issue of institutional data and the need for more of it in decision making was mentioned but it was not an overwhelming issue. It was something everyone agreed needed to be worked on.

3. As the protest continued in the fall, late in the semester (December, I think) MSCHE called President Jordan to advise him that the protest and all the media coverage had heightened concerns among the public about the university. Therefore, MSCHE was deferring a vote to reaffirm accreditation. While everything had been in order at the time of the PRR, the MSCHE was deeply troubled by the protest which had shut the university down and the all the media attention had the general public asking just what was going on.

4. For the record, Jordan and Fernandes left the university in good shape as far as accreditation goes.

5. The MSCHE sent a team of three university presidents to campus in January 2007. At that time, they determined that Gallaudet would be put on probation. The protest and the protestors are responsible for the probationary status currently in effect. And they are the ones who need to re-do work to assure that Gallaudet's accreditation is eventually reaffirmed. It remains to be seen what will happen.

6. The Performance Assessment Results Tool (PART) gave Gallaudet an erroneus rating of ineffective. The rating was caused more by the U.S. DOE's dereliction and neglect of it oversight responsibility than anything Gallaudet did. Jordan appealed the rating and the Office of Management and Budget agreed that the rating should be corrected to "adequate." If you think Jordan and Kunkle have the ability to twist the arms of the OMB, DOE, Senate, House and White House to change a rating, you must give them a lot of power. They must be full of power in your mind. Personally, I doubt they had anything to do with it. It was an error that was corrected.

Worst in history!

Fernandes is the source of Gallaudet's being on probation! Through the Department of Education, the White House gave Gallaudet an F while giving an A to the NTID in November 2005. Poor Davila
has to clean the mess Fernandes had left under the carpet. For her malfeasance, Fernandes's tenure would have been revoked if the BoT had not allowed Jordan to manipulate them -- at the expense of
stakeholders, including students!

Fernandes was the Solution -- Not the Problem

I suggest you stop lying if you want people to support you. If you are a sample of what Gallaudet is teaching its students, no wonder we're in deep trouble.

First, NTID did not get an A in the evaluation of its performance by the federal government. NTID got an adequate, squarely in the lower end of the pack. At first, Gallaudet received a rating of inadequate. However, this was erroneous and upon review, Gallaudet's rating was officially upgraded to adequate -- the exact same rating NTID received.

Second, Gallaudet was never on probation during the Jordan/Fernandes tenure. In 2001, Gallaudet received a full reaffirmation of its accreditation. In 2006, Gallaudet submitted a Periodic Review Report and received recommendations but no indication of probation and no sign of warning. Read the reports before you spread falsehoods.

After the Board of Trustees rescinded Fernandes' contract as president, demonstrating for the entire world that it was not in control of the institution, the Middle States Association decided to pay a site visit to campus. They did so in January 2007. At that time, they declared that Gallaudet was being placed on probation because the protest had shut down the university for several days and because of related media attention which had heightened public concern about what the university's purpose is.

Until the protestors understand the damage they inflicted on Gallaudet, the university will be hard pressed to move ahead. Stop blaming Fernandes and start looking at the flaws in the university system that allowed this situation to get completely out of control.

Fernandes was the Problem--Not the Solution

You are grasping at straws. All you have to do is look at the list of 8 areas of concern that the accreditors included in their November 2006 letter to Jordan (which he relayed in a December e-mail), and none of the 8 areas mentioned being concerned about the university being closed. The closure played a lesser role.

So far, the November 2006 letter hasn't been release to the public, but it is doubtful that it even mentioned the closure, which was probably only mentioned in a phone conversation, as a memo from Jordan seemed to indicate. Later, in January, the closure issue was added as a lesser issue and administration sources say that it wasn't even on the table, really, when the accreditors first visited, though they brought up the issue with the students.

Excuse me, but facts are not

Excuse me, but facts are not straws. I have stated facts that stand on their own regardless of what you come up with to distort them. MSCHE never would have looked at Gallaudet, period, if not for the protest. Gallaudet was accredited with flying colors under Jordan and Fernandes' leadership. That's a fact.

Power of choice

While you have the freedom to express your feelings, you should know better that trying to vilify them with the analogy of rapist would not get you anywhere.

Try to control your anger. How you treat them will either improve or tarnish the reputation of Gallaudet University and make an impact on the future students and professors. The power of choice is in your hands but choose wisely.

Riolo is being short-sighted

Riolo,

You're being short-sighted and not taking into account all the wrongdoings of IKJ, JK and KK.

You're just spouting platitudes with no substance.

dodo...

what can dr davila do about those three persons?

it sounds fishy. One got

it sounds fishy. One got twenty thousands thru lawsuit and why does she want to return? It must be a reason for them to return to Gally.

Fire them all or buy 'em

Fire them all or buy 'em off. Gallaudet don't need attitudes from the likes of them. Gallaudet need good will and respect.

They have rights

I am in favor of IKJ, JKF and KK returning to teach in the spring. They are tenured professors and have rights to employment. I personally think JKF is one of the brilliant minds on campus. She is more academic than 99% of the people there. I heard she is teaching required course so students cannot really opt out of taking it. As for KK, she is teaching two required and one elective. IKJ is teaching two electives. Gallaudet is supposed to be an academic institution where diverse perspectives are welcome!

Candi, Can you verify how

Candi,

Can you verify how JKF is academic? She has never taught a university course before until last year when she attempted to teach FYS for few weeks then got voted out of the classroom by the students.

Did you read her responses in the Chronicle of Higher Education? If you are well versed in the research regarding ASL and bilingualism, you'll realize how out of place her comments were.

If she was brilliant then why did the university end up being out of compliance since 2001? She was the CEO of Academics as a Provost.

And.. yes, they have rights.. they are legally allowed to return. That's where the system proved to be flawed. The faculty, staff, students here who have been traumatized by their intimidation and paternalistic leadership style have as much right to feel safe, however, they're not entitled to legal rights that were afforded to those three. Unfortunately.

RC

Fernandes is brilliant

RC:

I happen to believe that Fernandes is brilliant woman. When you make arguments based on lies, exaggerations and generalizations, you don't win over thinking people. If you want me to understand you and join your cause, you'll have to make a strong argument that is rational.

First, have you see Fernandes' CV? I don't have it handy but it was posted during the president search. She taught university classes at Northeastern, Gallaudet, U of Hawaii, U of Iowa and I cannot remember the other places. She was just teaching at OSU last week and I heard she got raves out there.

I know that the protest divided FYS class she was teaching last fall. I don't think you can use that as an example because it was an extraordinary circumstance in a climate stacked against her. I also know some of the kids who were in her class and they apologized to her afterwards. They felt pretty guilty. They liked her as a teacher.

I looked at the Chronicle article and her comments made sense to me. You'll have to specify and clarify where the comments were out of place. Fernandes herself, as I understand, speaks French, Latin and Italian, in addition to English and ASL. I'd say that qualifies her as knowing something about multilingualism. I don't understand you at all.

Candi

RC's picture

Candi...

I would recommend you to contact a linguist at Gallaudet University and ask her/him to explain the ramification of Fernandes' comment on bilingualism. Perhaps, you'll gain a better understanding of what we are dealing with here.

And, yes, I've seen her CV... I recall her experience being mainly administrative... not so much in teaching. She hasn't published much during all of her years in the field of higher education. I've received nothing but negative recounts of her as an administrator and I've personally experienced direct threat by her, face to face. Other people might have had a pleasant experience with her, I wouldn't deny that...however, the majority has spoken.

Fernandes is ahead of her time

Actually, I have discussed Fernandes' comments with linguists. They have suggested that Fernandes is ahead of her time and that with time the truth of her statements will become clear for us all. Pity those whose minds won't open enough to understand what she offers us all.

Okay, so her achievements are administrative. She is an administrator and an excellent one at that. She's doing what excellent administrators are expected to do and those who actively contribute to their fields, as Fernandes has done, are rare.

Since when is the majority always right? In history, a silent minority and sometimes a vocal/visible minority that is ignored by the status quo have often proven to be essential in moving us toward greater racial justice. Fernandes is the leader of minority that is taking us on the path to the future. If the majority has spoken, as you declare, and I highly doubt it myself, they are quite simply blind and wrong.

You are 100% correct. They

You are 100% correct. They have an agenda. They have no business back on campus. They can work anywhere. Why is it so important for them to work at Gallaudet? People need to be thinking about this question very seriously.

I wonder...

I wonder why is the deaf community letting this to happen? Is the Gallaudet community returning to the usual apathy after succeeding with its last protest? Is there anything that can be done to ensure that these paternalistic people wouldn't touch a shred of grass on Kendall Green?

I am trying to understand how they are able to return this spring? Legal settlements of which Gallaudet caved in in order to avoid paying millions of dollars? Or with Devila's blessings? What??

Agreed.

Thank you, RC for sharing the concern with us. I appreciate that. I have been wondered the same thing. So, I am curious what kind of postion will they be fill in? Hmmm

These were very well thought out comments...

These were very well thought out comments...You hit the nail on the head with the analog of rapist moving in a house next door. It's just exactly that image with that rapist having an agenda and we cannot feel at peace with him/her being right there all the time. Gosh...Thanks for bringing this to our attention and I send prayers your way with me being on the opposite coast.
