My first thought is why are you "stealing" the FUBU concept from the African-Americans? They coined the brand name/concept. I believe it's ok to share concepts like this, but it seems to me that some people on here are claiming the concept/quote/brand as our own. That doesn't look good for us.

The ONLY thing that is wrong is the deaf mentality.
No deaf can progress without education in specific fields. Qualifications to meet. Every VRS company has same problem. Gimme Gimme Gimme mentality.
Sorenson has specific qualifications for each position. There are quite a number already where they are and more taking education to move up. Nobody is stopping them. I am absolute sure other VRS companies are doing for same reasons.
The issue is development of skills for specific positions, and yes even public relations positions.
I should know because I used to work for a hearing owned company that has nothing to do with the deafness but I learned a lot while there about why it is important for the deaf NOT to limit themselves to "pity level", that the deaf need to stand firm and go for the education for progress.
So VRS industry, along with priests, audiologists, doctors, interpreters and teachers have now joined the groups of those who can both hold down the Deaf community even while they are working for, about and by the Deaf community.
This is an excellent blog. I don't have suggestions for reform, however. Right now the entire situation is based on the 'charity' model - the government pays for free services for us. Whether this is right or not is another issue, but the point is, they don't depend on the wallets of the Deaf consumer for real feedback. They get paid whether or not their services are crappy, and there isn't a lot of room for American Deaf people to provide feedback to the US government. To the companies themselves, maybe, but if they're corrupt, what then?

Great blog, Ryan and thanks for referring on to DrDonG. I have left a comment on his blog - the way ahead for true deaf ownership and control is through sharing the equity of the deaf run VRS companies - we should invest in their companies by purchasing stock and releasing funds for these companies to expand and compete. This way we would have a great reason to persuade our friends to migrate to that company and port their VP numbers across as the more successful that company becomes the greater value our stocks would then have!

I have been thinking the same thing as this has bothered me for the past few years.
First of all, why don't we start up a business under board of directors to handle VRS so 100% profit after expenses, will go back to the Deaf Community? I am not sure if Convo or BIS will contribute all their profits to the deaf community.
Second of all, I am not sure if 50% deaf will make the difference but it will help their employment skills though. Please allow me to play devil's advocate a bit here... let's say a hearing owner of a certified company decided to hire 99% deaf but all the profit will go to the hearing owner only. Will the hearing owner contribute these profits to the Deaf Community or just for himself where he can live off in a luxury style?
Great seeing you to spread your passion and it must become the community's passion as well to make things happen. I truly believe it will. With awareness being spread at the tips of our fingers via media, it's happening. I wholeheartedly agree with what you said. The new deaf owned VRS companies and existing ones have the advantage right NOW to follow the model that Sherri suggested and with your concept of giving back to ASL research and other critical things pertaining the future. Ryan, I was glad to see your video. I agree with you. VRS companies needs to do far better.
I'm one of many Deaf Shareholders of Purple. Purple was founded and built by Deaf People as well as CODAs. Purple probably has more Deaf executives than any other company in the world. The Company probably has more Deaf people managing the biggest budgets and the most people than any other company in the world.
Are they perfect? Absolutely not! Does any company have more deaf owners than Purple? Probably not. Does any company have more deaf executives than Purple? Probably not. Does any company have deaf people managing bigger budgets and more people than Purple? Probably not. Has any company fought for more communication rights than Purple? Probably not.
I'm a proud shareholder of Purple but I and other owners are continuing to make sure that Purple does not rest on its laurels. We will continue to make sure that Purple continues to hire and promote Deaf people. We will continue to make sure that Purple gives back more to the community than any other company and make sure that they continue to be the leader in fighting for communication rights for Deaf people.
Your video will go a long way to make sure that Purple continues to do better while encouraging other companies to do the right thing.
its really important we understand Gandhi's methods of civil disobedience

he really fostered home spun cottage industry - "make your own clothes" true bix - this may be one of the reasons why the Indian flag has a spin wheel type symbol. he mad he's own garments and encouraged others to do the same
this self-production to lead to self-governance is also tied into boycotting - another BIG technique Gandhi used
he also utilized STRIKES - a day where Indians all agreed not to go to work - this practically paralyzed the British run govt in India several times

Mohandas Gandhi called his approach satygraha - truth force / soul force

I thus began to call the Indian movement Satyagraha, that is to say, the Force which is born of Truth and Love or non-violence, and gave up the use of the phrase “passive resistance”, in connection with it, so much so that even in English writing we often avoided it and used instead the word “satyagraha”....

Dear Ryan, thank you for doing an excellent job expanding on this concept, I really love the brilliant correllation between the VRS industry and Deaf Infants human right to sign language! We have a great group in California working to make changes in the newborn hearing screening program, and such efforts would indeed go farther if we had more people invest time and money in this issue. I do feel its important to add, that there are several companies who are not deaf owned, but whom have hired a good number of deaf employees who obviously do not make up more than 50% yet, but as we push this forward, in 20 years from now, this too shall be considered the norm because the need for VRS should be greater than it is now, with a twist perhaps. More on this later, for now, I simply wanted to thank you for undertaking this important issue.

I'm so glad that you, RC, made an effort to dig up a little about VRS industry and focus on the exploitation of Deaf people's language by VRS industry.
I did make several vlogs in the past regarding the VRS industry and it really irked me to no end when people tried to spin it around and accuse others of this, that and there.
The bottom line is that the VRS industry is clearly dominated by hearing peers who created the glass ceiling against Deaf individuals, hence led me to believe that this is a true potential of exploitation.
Thanks so much!
I'm kinda irked at Dr. Don for stealing the idea about FUBU -- I had the note here a while ago that I wanted to talk about FUBU. Too bad, Dr Don beats me to it! :-)
Nods.. yeah. Thanks... VRS exploitations bothered me for a long time.. remember when Sorenson refused to make the VPs on Gallaudet campus open for those who want to make point to point calls because it doesnt make money for Sorenson? The VPs for a good while (at least a year) were restricted to VRS calls only... I was so pissed at Sorenson.
Now with FCC's workshop ... there were a lot of information that we could use to make our case... especially with Sheri's point.. along with Dr. Don G's vlog (I was gonna make the same vlog but he beat me to it too!) ..
I'm feeling it.. the movement has begun. FUBU!
Lets mobilize our community and encourage them to add deaf owned/run vrs company's call number (convorelay.tv, win.tv ...) on VP and use them instead of Sorenson. They own 85-90% of the market.. talk about monopoly. Put an end to this.

Wow, I didn't know about that re: Sorenson and VP restrictions. So dirty of them to do that.
I'd add one other thought. While we can control which VRS companies we can use to make calls, if I am correct, we don't have much say about incoming calls? Like many VRS consumers, my VP is Sorenson's and I believe incoming calls to the phone number assigned to my VP device goes thru Sorenson.
Is there anything we can do about that other than getting a new VP from other company? I don't even think any of three known Deaf owned VRS companies have their own VPs to sell or give away.
I also have been wondering about one thing ever since that FCC workshop - why isn't the US government doing something about Sorenson's monopoly? Last time I checked, monopoly is illegal in our capitalist society since it discourages innovation and competition which supposedly is good for consumers.
FUBU!
January 25, 2010 - 7:12pm — Anonymous Signer (not verified)
Boucher - you do not HAVE to accept incoming calls from a specific VRS service. Theoritically you can port the VP number to a different VRS provider (hopefully a Deaf-led one) and this means you keep the same number but all incoming calls will go through the new VRS service.
Some VRS may send a deaf installer to remove the VP because of the small print but this will cause more bad publicity!!!
Get rid of the fear - confront it by standing up for your ideals!
January 18, 2010 - 2:15pm — Boucher (not verified)
Hello, Ryan! Once again, a good vlog. A good VRS company who sincerely cares about the community it serves definitely should seek to re-invest some of their profits into that community especially in protecting and preserving ASL and Deaf children's right to have a language they can comfortably communicate in which is ASL, naturally. As you pointed out, this has not been happening. Perhaps we need something like a watchdog to watch what VRS companies are doing, where their donations and sponsor money are going?
As for the question regarding what are VRS companies' plan to cultivate deaf employees and their talents so they can move upwardly into managerial positions, I'm reminded of a graduate school level sociology course I took few years ago. We discussed about the role of what we called "gatekeepers." Gatekeepers are individuals, organizations, or social groups which has the role of "screening out" a group of people and determine whom should be allowed to be granted access to a position of power and whom should not be. This is connected to a concept called Credentialism.
I question whether if it is a good idea for us to sit back and allow VRS companies' higher-level managers to become gatekeepers for future potential deaf managers. Heck, they are already acting as a gatekeeper - saying "Sorry you don't have enough experience hence you are not qualified for this and that position." We could pressure them into doing something to increase % of deaf employees in higher levels in their companies but if we sit back and allow them come up with workshops, training opportunities and so on, I bet you, they will continue to act as gatekeepers. Sure, maybe they will find ways to increase % of deaf high level managers but will they be culturally Deaf or dysconscious audists or only audiological deaf?
A related example would be I. Jordan King. As you know already, during the DPN, the community demanded a Deaf president and the BoT (gatekeepers in their own right) gave the community a dysconscious audist (or audiological deaf whatever how you want to argue it). The community, not knowing any better, accepted this token.
Should we accept similar tokens in VRS companies?
While it'd be a progress to have VRS companies to increase % of deaf high level managers, we should look at how they are going at it. I'd prefer to have a Deaf-owned and Deaf-run training firm to conduct those trainings and workshops instead of having VRS companies having their own in-house trainings. Which would be more ideal is to have more VRS companies Deaf-owned and Deaf-run.
Even with Deaf-owned and Deaf-run companies, we should still watch them and encourage them to re-invest back into the community. We cannot assume since they're Deaf, they will do so.
Anyway, again a good vlog and thank you too for your role in the '06 protest! :)
excellent points.. yes.. after watching Dr. Don G's vlog about FUBU concept... I'm inspired and spurred to make another vlog and it'll be about FUBU. Instead of barking at VRS, we should focus our energies on mobilizing our community to support Deaf owned/run VRS companies! and because they're deaf owned/run.. we'd have more access in watching them, influencing them.. after all, we share the same values (most of the time) ..
si?

Indeed, FUBU! We as a community definitely should embrace the concept as I've argued for years (although not as poignant) within my tiny circle of friends.
We as a community should seek to boycott companies and corporations who have acted in audisitic manner such as Virgin Airlines and their treatment of Hindu deaf woman few weeks ago.
We as a community should explore out, nurture, and patronize Deaf "FUBU" companies and corporations as long as they conduct their business in ethical manner and do not exploit our community.
I do have a question although - I was thinking recently... since ConvoRelay and BIS (probably WIN as well) are "white label", who do they latch upon to? How do their latchees benefit from having them latching upon them? Even if there are profits involved for latchees, I still encourage us to support those Deaf owned VRS companies and I do hope they will seek to become credentialed. I vaguelly recall a tweet by Kelby Brick made recently (within last week) about the credential process and apparently it's simple. Perhaps it's simple on paper but not in reality.
In any case, I shall be keeping an eye out for your next vlog!
Cheers and.... FUBU!

Thank you for make this vlog! Your message made me think about YouTube.com/DrDonGCSUS explained about "FUBU" by black people. Encourage Deaf people copy idea of FUBU. It's mean "For US, By US"!!!
Thank you for making this vlog. It does provide food for thought.
There is a lot of hidden talent at VRS companies and as of today, remain all but untapped. Since there is intense competition within the VRS industry, it would be prudent for each VRS company to develop a plan to identify, recruit, retain, and groom potential talent from the lower ranks to the middle tier and the executive levels. Such hidden talent can differentiate a VRS company from the pack, or even allow one to catch-up/overtake the main leader of the industry, Sorenson VRS.
Meanwhile, Deaf people should not 'settle' for commission-based jobs or pay-per-occurrence jobs such as sales and/or installations. Either these people find opportunities to move within the same company or in the industry, or face the risk of being 'stuck' with no career prospects.
The VRS industry is not the only career path for Deaf/HH people. Why be 'stuck' at the bottom ranks of the VRS industry? There's Deaf schools where you can try to find employment. There's non-profit Deaf/HH agencies in which to seek employment. There's Gallaudet/RIT. There's the Federal and State governments in which you would apply your talents to. A lot of Deaf/HH people work at the Post Office. There's always the private industry, such as retail, manufacturing, services, and more. And for the truly bold, you could always start a business.
In a nutshell, yes, I would like the VRS industry to employ more Deaf/HH people in a salaried capacity. I would like the VRS industry to contribute more back to the Deaf community, be it events, scholarships, expo's, schools, etc. Deaf/HH people should settle for no less, and should patronize VRS companies that have closely aligned beliefs and values. However, the VRS industry is not the end-all; plenty of alternatives exist.

There is another Deaf-owned company, Western Interpreting Network (WIN) owned by my friend, Eric Feris, although I don't know if this is another "white label" or not. Will ask him when I see him in a few weeks.
Thanks for letting me know! I'll google up WIN and mention it during the next vlog. BIS and Convo are both white labels.. currently there are no deaf owned certified VRS company. Used to be CSDVRS under Ben Soukup as a CEO but then CSD sold it to a hearing guy... now Z VRS.. not sure how many deaf people hold the top positions there.
Thanks!

FUBU!

Wow
FUBU!
Boucher - you do not HAVE to
Boucher - you do not HAVE to accept incoming calls from a specific VRS service.
My thoughts re: your vlog
Boucher...
excellent points.. yes.. after watching Dr.

FUBU!
FUBU!
Thank you!
Thank you for make this vlog! Your message made me think about YouTube.com/DrDonGCSUS explained about "FUBU" by black people. Encourage Deaf people copy idea of FUBU. It's mean "For US, By US"!!!
whoa! YES YES YES!
Dr. DON G was right on target! http://www.youtube.com/DrDonGCSUS
I love it! Lets start the movement! I gotta work on a little script now.. need to do a vlog bringing attention to Dr. Don G's point...
Thanks for pointing me to the video!

VRS Retention Plan
Good points, Ryan! There is
Good points, Ryan!
There is another Deaf-owned company, Western Interpreting Network (WIN) owned by my friend, Eric Feris, although I don't know if this is another "white label" or not. Will ask him when I see him in a few weeks.
FUBU!
I just watched your vlog about FUBU.. (Don G.. .. i assume you're the same Dr. Don G?) ... excellent points!
FUBU! Definitely, I'm on your bandwagon, good sir!

Don G.
Thanks!

"VRS Vlog #1"
Ryan,
I watched with interest your video regarding VRS. It is thought-provoking!
I urge you to post it on FACEBOOK because DeafRead does not have "SHARE".
More power to you.

RE: VRS Reform Workshop...
To whom it may concern:
If i may throw a suggest that VRS Industry should have group of Board of Trustee or Board of
Director with 50%/50% of Hearing and Deaf in this group to oversee all VRS Industry?
Just like state of Oregon (maybe other state too) have this group to oversee their state TRS.
Thanks
