VLOG: RID of our future?

Yesterday, the RID Committee Chairperson for the Educational Interpreting Task Force, Susan Brown, finally replied to my concerns (originally outlined in ASL here and in English here). I'd been waiting for several days, so I was glad to hear from her - but she asked me to wait until, er, AFTER the vote to clarify the answers to my questions. (SMALL CORRECTION: After the vote is completed - the vote is online and will complete on April 12th, 2010.)

While I appreciate that people are busy - I myself have two jobs - because of the sensitive nature of this Standard Practice Paper, I have respectfully asked that if the Committee Chairperson cannot tell me if Deaf people have been consulted in a comprehensive way in the writing of this document, that they refer me to someone who can.

Update: Reliable email sources say that despite several interpreters voting no, the bill seems likely to pass.

I AGREE!!!!! RID should not

I AGREE!!!!! RID should not force the Deaf Community to become members to hear our opinions, concerns, feelings, etc. Regardless if it's a SSP or other issues. So RID Pockets some MORE cash so we can tell them how we feel??? Charge 15.00 bucks from every Deaf person who wants a say???

NY standards

Hello , I find your VBlog most interesting. Clearly you are taking poetic license with this If people are interested in learning the facts, please go to www.rid.org

Clearly you educated, bright and do have excellent points but honestly, they are clouded by the fabrications. Perfect tabloid material, a little fact and a lot of misguided information in hopes to get folks rilled up.

EDITOR: If you can point out the 'fabrications' I'd be happy to fix them!

I did not see your name down as a member of RID, but if you were , you would have know about this SSP papers over a year ago and could have been part of it and not need to wait until the 11th hour . It would be great to have you as a member, think about joining.

Lastly, As you may or may not be aware. NY does NOT have any standards reagarding educational interpreting, NONE! As an educator, maybe work with your own state DOE, set standards that address your concerns.

Tabloid material?

I've been talking about this for weeks with the RID and haven't fabricated anything, but you're welcome to be specific if you can. Although i think the 'young' part of your message is cute as i advance through my thirties...

I'm a teacher, not an interpreter. I don't think the RID should only listen to interpreters. It's that attitude that keeps deaf people reading at the fourth grade level. The attitude that deaf people shouldn't be involved in decisions about deaf education. Why wasn't the RID reaching out to set up focus groups on this? Don't you think it's a mistake to keep it within the interpreting community?

As for new york - like most states, we don't have standards. We do, in new york city, have a large interpreting team that covers public education and it works in a great way. Unfortunately, we can't reproduce this everywhere. I do enjoy working with our DIRC, however.

The Deaf Nation has many tribes.

You would be very surprised

You would be very surprised at the states that have standards. More than not. Oh and by the way, good for your school district in setting standards, RID does not trump, or "RULE" those. RID does not "rule" any states as your Vblog suggests. Please re-read the SSP when it speaks to the laws.

Again, if you were a member of RID you would of know this was happening and could of been part of it like our other 15K members.

I didn't say it "ruled" anything

Why don't you stop being anonymous for a minute so I know who I'm talking to?

What I said, clearly, was that the Standard Position Paper will become, er, standard. Schools and districts download these guidelines.

Again, RID members should not be the only people making decisions about Deaf people's education. That's a kind of oppression too. You work with a deaf population, and say only interpreters can be part of that discussion! That's part of the big problem here.

I'm interested in becoming a member, but not if the organization refuses to listen to the population it works with - is that your attitude? Please clarify.

The Deaf Nation has many tribes.

Dear Joe, Please review the first few minutes of your first Vblog regarding "rules"

* RID has a membership group Deaf Caucus
( from the RID website) The Deaf Caucus strives to strengthen the ties between all members of RID, advocate for the needs and interests of RID members who are deaf and provide a vehicle for open discussion and exchange of ideas.

* RID has 100 CDIs and growing!

* one does not need to be an interpreter to be a member of RID

* RID's web page is open, you can review for yourself interpreters certifications

* the EIPA as you stated is called the Ed:K12 certification

Wish you well, over and out.

You need to watch and read all my messages.

More to my point-

Non interpreter members can't vote.

"Rules"-I described the standard practice paper as regulations that interpreters should follow, yes. I didn't say they were ruling over local groups or local laws, which was what people were implying i was trying to say. No, i stand by my original comment - the standard practice papers are abstract national guidelines. Maybe i didn't explain that they're adapted to individual states, but the point is adaptation, and the baseline from which one begins.

Back to the whole not listening bit.... Ive been speaking with those CDIs. Many share concerns. Some have invited me to speak to local groups. as for the deaf caucus-why weren't they consulted on the SPP? And if they were, why couldn't anyone just tell me that in our email exchanges instead of giving me a runaround? I suspect they weren't consulted.

Your response raises more questions than answers, sorry. It's the runaround that inspired this blog, not the lack of resources in RID.

You're speaking as if i blogged with no cause, but I've been in contact with the people in charge since March 23rd. And so far you've told me more than they have.
The Deaf Nation has many tribes.
