The News Roundup takes a look at news, with a Deaf perspective. This week: more Deaf abuse scandals come to light, the RID's Educational Interpreting Vote, See What I'm Saying, and other news tidbits.
In The News: The RID will be voting today about whether or not to standardize their practice paper regarding educational interpreting, a paper which seems to have been developed entirely without the involvement of Deaf ex-mainstreamers or current mainstreamers. (See our concerns in ASL here and in English here.) This document is seen by many to be oppressive to both the Deaf person and the interpreter, especially since it makes no provision for team interpreting; unfortunately the chair of the Educational Interpreting Task Force has put off responding till questions until after the vote. Stories have been pouring in from ASL interpreters, CDIs, and Deaf people about their interpreting experiences and thanking us for bringing this to light. We've written an Open Letter to the RID President, to be posted today.
Pope Benedict XVI has been implicated in the coverup of yet another deaf child abuse scandal, this time in England, while Italian Deaf people beg for him to carry out justice. See also: Arthur Budzynski, Deaf victim of abuse, gives an interview.
The movie See What I'm Saying is getting excellent reviews in the New York Times. Call your local theater and ask them to bring it to their city!
And a piece of GREAT news: Illinois will be writing a check to bail out the state school for the Deaf and Blind. The school, which owes $17 million dollars, will be able to continue operating through June.
Of Note: This tidbit in the Washington Post which talks about Deaf baseball players in history.
